From Student Mentor to Street Medicine as a Physician Assistant

I am super, super excited to have Anthony Manacho on this podcast. Anthony is a Family Medicine and Street Medicine PA. He practices in Woodland, California. Anthony also serves as the Executive Director of Sacramento Street Medicine.

Anthony actually was a National Health Service Corps Scholar and graduated from a PA program. In addition to this, he’s had his Bachelor’s in Kinesiology at California State. Anthony has mentored hundreds of students. Many of these students are now in Medical PA or graduate school.

Professionally, as I mentioned, Anthony is involved with Sacramento Street Medicine. The goal for this is to provide medical care to the unhoused population of South Sacramento. Anthony also was nominated for Man of the Year San Bernardino County 2019.

Meet Anthony Menacho

Anthony grew up with his dad, the son of two immigrants. He recalls he always seen his dad sick and being bed-ridden from the time Anthony was eight to the time he was 18 years old. As a matter of fact, when Anthony was 18 and attending college, his dad actually was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma late stage. Unfortunately, Anthony and his loved ones lost his dad to cancer.

Prior to then, medicine was the last thing Anthony wanted to get into. On the other hand, a few years after that he done a health disparities research as a Health Disparities Research Scholar at Cal. State.

The Reason for Anthony’s Choice of Street Medicine PA

As a result, Anthony discovered his dad went through a number of health disparities. Furthermore, Anthony was finding there was a predisposition. For instance, some providers seemed bias, even with no language barriers. Anthony then started by going to a pre-medical and pre-owned conference in Sacramento.

Anthony finds that he has made a conscious choice to be a PA. As a matter of fact, he actually chooses to be a PA over a doctor due to feeling that it offers him more flexibility. He feels he needs more flexibility in terms of opportunities to do things outside of clinical medicine. As a result, it is the kind of flexibility that Anthony finds works for him.

From starting Sacramento Street Medicine to mentoring college students through Brain Box Methods, Anthony Menacho is one of the most inspiring people and PAs you will meet.

With a heart of gold, in this episode, Tony and I talk about everything from becoming a PA, balancing fatherhood, and pursuing his passion. In addition, you can find links to his website and social media below.
